  • Antibiotics may be considered when there are signs that a dental infection is spreading beyond the tooth itself. Symptoms that suggest a more serious or systemic infection include a raised temperature, swelling affecting the face, difficulty opening the mouth, swollen or tender lymph nodes, and feeling generally tired or unwell.

Every case is carefully reviewed by one of our experienced dentists, who will determine if antibiotics are clinically appropriate before a prescription is issued.

  • Antibiotics are not appropriate for all dental problems. Many issues can be effectively managed with local measures or dental treatment rather than antibiotics.
If there are no signs of a spreading infection such as a raised temperature, facial swelling, difficulty opening the mouth, swollen or tender lymph nodes, or feeling generally unwell then antibiotics are unlikely to help and may cause unnecessary side effects or contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Our dentists follow strict clinical guidelines and will only prescribe antibiotics if they are truly needed to support your dental emergency.
